IB Biology — Expert Guide

How to Get a 7 in
IB Biology

Achieving the top mark in IB Biology is absolutely within reach — but it requires more than just working hard. It requires working smart. Here is what our specialist IB Biology teachers know that most students don't.

Why Most Students Don't Reach 7

The IB Biology paper rewards precision, not just knowledge. Students who score 5s and 6s typically know the content — but they lose marks on command terms, poorly structured answers, and Internal Assessment mistakes that are entirely avoidable. A 7 is about eliminating those losses, not memorising more facts.

Our teachers have marked IB papers and tutored students across dozens of private and international schools worldwide. What follows is exactly what we tell our students — and what our IB Biology tutors work on with every student we coach.

The 7 Keys to a 7

01

Master the Command Terms First

Before you study a single topic, learn what "outline", "explain", "evaluate" and "discuss" actually mean in IB marking language. These words determine how many sentences your answer needs and what level of detail is expected. Most students write excellent biology but answer the wrong question because they misread the command term. This single change can add 8–12 marks across a paper.

02

Study the Syllabus, Not Just Your Notes

The IB Biology syllabus is your marking scheme in disguise. Every bullet point is a potential exam question. Print it out and tick off each point as you can confidently explain it. If you can't explain a bullet point in two clear sentences, that is a gap. Students who study from textbooks alone often miss syllabus points that are easy marks.

03

Treat Your IA Like a Second Exam

The Internal Assessment is worth 20% of your final grade. Most students underinvest here and then fight for marks in the exam to compensate. Choose a research question that is genuinely answerable with the equipment you have, ensure you have enough data points for statistical analysis, and write your conclusion with direct reference to your hypothesis. The IA is one of the most controllable parts of your IB Biology grade.

04

Draw and Label Everything

IB Biology examiners love diagrams. If a question asks you to describe a process — mitosis, protein synthesis, the cardiac cycle — draw it. A well-labelled diagram with arrows can replace three sentences of written explanation and is often clearer to a marker. Practise your key diagrams until you can reproduce them accurately in under two minutes.

05

Do Past Papers Under Timed Conditions

There is no substitute for this. IB Biology Paper 1 and Paper 2 have predictable question styles. After completing five or more past papers you will start to recognise patterns — topics that appear every year, the way data response questions are structured, how many marks a six-mark question actually needs. Time yourself strictly. Running out of time in Paper 2 is one of the most common reasons students miss a 7.

06

Learn the Difference Between SL and HL Content

If you are taking HL Biology, the additional topics — metabolism, nucleic acids, immunology and neurobiology — carry significant marks and are tested with greater depth. Many HL students focus revision time on SL material they already know. Prioritise your HL-only content in the final six weeks before exams. This is where the gap between a 6 and a 7 often sits.

07

Get Expert Feedback on Your Written Answers

Biology knowledge and biology exam technique are two different skills. The fastest way to improve your written answers is to have someone who understands IB marking criteria read them and tell you exactly where marks are being lost. Self-marking past papers is useful, but it rarely catches the subtle errors in phrasing and structure that cost students the difference between a 6 and a 7.

Key Insight

The students who achieve a 7 in IB Biology are not always the ones who know the most biology. They are the ones who understand how to communicate their knowledge in the exact way IB examiners are trained to reward. This is a learnable skill — and it is exactly what specialist IB Biology coaching addresses.

When to Start Preparing

Ideally, exam technique should be built alongside content learning from Year 1. But even starting focused preparation six months before your May exams gives you enough time to work through past papers systematically, address IA weaknesses, and lock in the command term discipline that separates 6s from 7s.

Students who come to us in the final six weeks before exams can still improve significantly — but the students who work with us across a full academic year consistently achieve the grades they're targeting.
